Department Events

All departmental seminars are Wednesdays either at noon or from 4-5:15 pm during the academic year. Unless otherwise noted, presentations are held in Cummings Life Science Center (CLSC) and are open to the public. Topics cover the field of human genetics broadly.

Work-in-Progress Seminars occur monthly and feature presentations of current research occurring in faculty labs. Unless otherwise noted, presentations are held in Cummings Life Science Center (CLSC) in Room 119 and are open to the public. Snacks are provided.

Our Journal Club meets monthly during the academic year. A current pre-doctoral student presents a current journal article under the guidance of and in consultation with a faculty member. Unless otherwise noted, journal club is held in Cummings Life Science Center (CLSC) in Room 119 and is open to the public.

The Human Genetics Seminar Series is a monthly series of talks by noted researchers from outside the University. These seminars are held in the Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery (KCBD) 1103.

The Department of Human Genetics hosted the first Midwest Population Genetics conference, at the University of Chicago campus, on July 19th, 2014. The one day conference was attended by 80 participants, from 20 labs across the midwest. Attendees drove in from Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin and Minnesota. There were 15 posters and 11 lectures, 7 by grad-students or postdocs and 4 by assistant professors. For more information about this annual conference and how to register for future conferences, please see the Midwest Population Genetics site.

The HG Department organizes a two-day Software Carpentry bootcamp annually.
Free of charge and aimed at graduate students with little to no previous computer programming experience, the course gives students a solid computing foundation that will help with graduate coursework and research. Students are taught how to automate tasks using the Bash shell, how to build computer programs using R, and how to manage your code using Git.
Please visit the 2017 bootcamp homepage for further information. A second workshop will focus on an Introduction to R.
