Susceptibility Alleles
A second-generation genome screen with 563 markers was completed in 693 individuals.Four diagnostic categories of asthma and five categories of atopy were studied (Ober et al. 2000). All subjects were evaluated by the same criteria as that used in the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Asthma (CSGA, 1997). The four asthma categories were: 1) past or current history of symptoms and BHR (i.e., "strict" asthma), 2) BHR with or without past or current history of symptoms, 3) past or current history of symptoms with or without BHR; and 4) past or current history of asthma or BHR (i.e., "loose" asthma). Atopy was defined as a positive skin prick test to: 1) one or more (of 14) allergen, 2) house dust mite allergen, 3) mold allergens, 4) cockroach allergens, or 5) tree/pollen allergens. The likelihood ratio chi square test was used as a test of linkage (Curtis and Sham, 1995).
