Asthma Susceptibility Alleles

Carole Ober, Ph. D.

A genome screen with 295 markers and four diagnostic categories of asthma has been completed (Ober et al. 1998). All subjects were evaluated by the same criteria as that used in the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Asthma (CSGA, 1997). The four diagnostic categories are: 1) past or current history of symptoms and BHR (i.e., "strict" asthma), 2) BHR with or without past or current history of symptoms, 3) past or current history of symptoms with or without BHR; and 4) past or current history of asthma or BHR (i.e., "loose" asthma). The transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) was used as one test of linkage.
