I counsel patients evaluated in the general genetics and brain malformations clinics.  In addition, I work with Dr. Carole Ober on several research projects involving the mapping of complex traits.  Another research interest involves the study of chromosome 9p deletions and I coordinate this research for Dr. Stuart Schwartz. An additional responsibility is to maintain the Department of Human Genetics website. I have recently joined the faculty of the Northwestern Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling.

Melissa Dempsey Melissa Dempsey, M.S.

I am the primary genetic counselor for the clinical cytogenetic and molecular genetic laboratories. I am available to answer questions from other medical professionals regarding our testing. I also prepare educational materials for our website and assist in the development of new tests. In addition, I provide genetic counseling in the general genetics clinics and inpatient consult service at The University of Chicago along with a Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinic at Little Company of Mary Hospital. Recently, I joined the faculty of the Northwestern Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling.

Sara Halbach Sara Halbach , M.S.

I counsel patients evaluated in the general genetics as well as Maternal-Fetal Medicine patients at Little Company of Mary Hospital. In addition, I work with Nancy Cox, Ph.D. in the Department of Medicine, Section of Genetic Medicine on a project to expand the use of genetics among internal medicine practitioners.

Genetic Counselor

I counsel patients in the general genetics clinics and brain malformation clinics, as well as Maternal Fetal Medicine patients at Hinsdale Hospital with Dr. Daniel Gauthier.  I am also the clinic coordinator for The Fetal Center at the University.  The Fetal Center is a multidisciplinary program that aides in facilitating the management and treatment of complex high-risk pregnancies.  My personal work interests include skeletal dysplasias, management of high-risk pregnancies, and psychosocial counseling for genetic disorders.
